Dictionary Setup & Usage Guide

One of the great advantages of reading digitally is getting instant translations by clicking or tapping on words. This guide covers everything you need to know about setting up and using dictionaries across different devices and apps.

Kindle Devices

Kindle Paperwhite & Earlier Generations

  1. Open "Settings"
  2. Select "Language & Dictionaries"
  3. Set your preferred dictionary
  4. Tap words while reading to see translations

You can switch dictionaries while reading by long-pressing a word, tapping the dictionary name, and selecting a new one. The setting usually persists — but may reset after updates.

Troubleshooting

Wrong Dictionary Language?

  1. Open "Settings > Language & Dictionaries"
  2. Make sure the correct language is selected
  3. Switch dictionaries manually if needed

Missing Dictionary Option?

  1. Ensure your Kindle app/device is up to date
  2. Check if your Amazon region supports the desired dictionary

Some custom bilingual dictionaries are region-locked. You may need to switch your Amazon account to a supported region (e.g., US, UK, DE) to download them.
