What is DRM in Ebooks?
DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a technology used by some publishers and ebook stores to control how readers can use their purchased books.
How DRM Affects Your Books
When you buy an ebook with DRM:
- You're locked into specific apps or devices (like only being able to read on Kindle)
- You can't freely move your books between different reading apps
- You can't create backups or convert to other formats
- You might lose access to your books if:
- The store closes your account
- The store removes the book
- The DRM servers become unavailable
Why Publishers Use DRM
Publishers implement DRM hoping to prevent unauthorized copying. However, DRM often causes problems for legitimate customers while doing little to stop determined pirates.
Why We Don't Use DRM
When you get an ebook without DRM, you can:
- Read on any device or app
- Create backups
- Convert to other formats
- Keep your books forever
