Getting Started

Launching the App

Load Cards via your account or go directly to flashcards.learnoutlive.com in your web browser. The application is designed to work offline once loaded, ensuring your study sessions are uninterrupted.

tip
The basic application is accessible for anyone, for free, even if you've never purchased a book from us or don't have a LearnOutLive Books account yet.

Cards leverages your browser's local storage for maximum performance and privacy.

Loading Your Cards

There are two ways to get your flashcards into the app:

1. Loading from LearnOutLive Books (Recommended)

  1. Go to your account
  2. Select the book you want to study
  3. Click "Study Now"
  4. The flashcard decks for your selected book will automatically load into the app

This is the recommended method as it:

  • Ensures you always have the latest version of the decks
  • Automatically tracks your progress (per device/browser)
  • Provides seamless integration with your LearnOutLive books
  • Automatically loads all cards (one deck per chapter)

2. Manual Anki Decks (APKG) Import

You can also manually import APKG files:

  • All APKG files that come with LearnOutLive books are fully supported
  • Third-party APKG files may work with limitations:
    • Only basic front/back card layouts are supported
    • Media files (audio/images) are not supported
    • We don't provide support for third-party files
note
For LearnOutLive book flashcards, we recommend using the automatic loading method through your account rather than manual APKG import.

Study Sessions

Now that you've imported your first deck(s) you are ready to start your first study session. You can either select "View Details" to familiarize yourself with the cards or start a study session:

Starting a Session

  1. Select a deck from your library
  2. Click "Study Now"
  3. The system will automatically prepare an optimized set of cards based on your settings

During Review

  • Flip the card by tapping it or clicking it:
  • Rate your recall by clicking or tapping the corresponding button:
    • Again (Complete blackout)
    • Hard (Incorrect response)
    • Good (Correct with effort)
    • (Perfect recall)

Review Progress

If you rate certain cards as difficult ("again" or "hard") you will see them again soon. If you rate cards consistently as "easy" or "good" you will see them less often. This is in line with common spaced repetition principles.

Customizing Study Sessions

You can customize various aspects of your study sessions in the Settings page:

Study Modes

Choose from three study direction modes:

  • Front to Back (Default): Cards are shown with the front side first
  • Back to Front: Cards are shown with the back side first
  • Mixed: Random selection of either front or back side first

You can also enable Show Both Sides When Flipped, which will display both the question and answer when you flip a card. This can help with:

  • Reviewing the question and answer together
  • Strengthening the connection between question and answer
  • Easier verification of your response

Session Settings

  • Total cards per session (default: 20)
  • New cards per session (default: 5)
  • New to review ratio (10-50%)
note
We recommend starting out with default settings.

Progress Tracking

Your learning progress is tracked in two phases:

Phase 1: Initial Completion (Blue)

  • Shows percentage of cards seen at least once
  • Focus on getting familiar with all cards

Phase 2: Mastery (Green)

  • Begins after seeing all cards once
  • Based on review count, recall accuracy, and consistency

For detailed information about the mastery calculation, see our spaced repetition guide.

tip
Focus on completion first - see all cards at least once. Then work on mastery by consistently reviewing and rating cards honestly.

Statistics Dashboard

The Statistics page provides a comprehensive overview of your learning journey across all decks. Here's what you can find:

Key Metrics

  • Total Reviews: The number of card reviews you've completed
  • Total Cards: The total number of cards across all your decks
  • Average Ease: Your overall ease factor, indicating how well you're retaining information
  • Study Streak: Your current daily study streak

Study Activity

A visual breakdown of your study activity over the past week:

  • Cards studied per day shown as a bar chart
  • Weekly total cards studied
  • Average cards per day
  • Your best study day

Retention Rate

A circular progress indicator showing:

  • The percentage of correct responses
  • Based on your actual recall performance
tip
The retention rate shows the percentage of cards you recalled correctly out of all cards studied, giving you an objective measure of your immediate recall success rate.

Using Statistics to Improve

  1. Study Streak: Try to maintain your streak for consistent learning
  2. Activity Graph: Identify your most productive study days
  3. Retention Rate: If it drops below 75%, consider:
    • Reducing the number of new cards per session
    • Spending more time on initial learning
    • Rating cards more strictly
note
Statistics are specific to each browser/device. If you use multiple devices, each will track its own statistics.

Best Practices

  1. Study regularly rather than cramming
  2. Be honest with your recall ratings
  3. Keep sessions manageable (15-30 minutes)
  4. Review statistics weekly to adjust settings
warning
The system adapts to your performance, so honesty in rating is crucial for optimal learning.

Tips for Effective Learning

  1. Optimal Study Times

    • Study when you're alert
    • Space sessions throughout the day
    • Maintain a consistent schedule
  2. Rating Best Practices

    • Be honest with yourself
    • Don't hesitate on ratings
    • Consider response time in ratings
  3. Managing Workload

    • Start with smaller decks
    • Gradually increase daily limits
    • Monitor and adjust as needed
